C Scow Trophies
Robert C Winslow Memorial Trophies
There are two Winslow Memorial Trophies. The larger trophy reads "Robert C Winslow Memorial Trophy Maxinkuckee Yacht Club Annual Handicap Senior Class" and was first awarded to Walker Winslow in 1931. Later the E Scow trophy until 1959. In 1963 the C Scow Saturday Series started and it was awarded to Jerome Zechiel the 1st 3 years. In 2014, it became the Spring Series Trophy.
The second Winslow Memorial Trophy was first awarded in 1932 and has been the C Scow Sunday Championship Series trophy ever since. In 2014, the Sunday Championship Series became the Summer Championship Series.
E. Allen Becker Memorial Trophy
Allen Becker was Principal Race Officer (PRO) for many years and Commodore Emeritus. This trophy was donated by his family and is awarded to the winner of the Fall Series.
Tucker-Speer Memorial Day Series Trophy
This trophy was donated by Joe Schaub IV in honor of Dave Tucker and Steve Speer. Dave and Steve were both sailors of MYC and organized the Memorial Day Series. This trophy is to be awarded to the winner of the Memorial Day Series.
Don Trone Memorial Trophy
This trophy was donated by Pete Trone in memory of his father, Don. It is to be awarded to the winner of the first weekend series after Memorial Day.
E. Allen Becker Trophy
This trophy was donated by Mr. & Mrs. Fred Wurster in honor of Allen Becker. It is to be awarded to the winner of the weekend series of the Commodore's Party.
Jim Russell Father's Day Trophy
This trophy was donated by the Chandler and Hartzell family members in honor of their father. It is to be awarded to the first father to cross the finish line during the race on Father's Day, or the next race sailed. As of 2014, both C Scows and MC Scow skippers are eligible.
The Zechiel Memorial Cup
In honor of Jerome "Zeke" and Betty Zechiel, this trophy was donated by Richard Balkama, Zeke's crew during the mid-80's. Zeke was a C Scow champion in the 60's and 70's and known for his great lessons such as "We can do this all afternoon, but if we can't execute, we lose". Part of Betty's love for Zeke was accepting the fact that he was going to do that crazy thing called sailing notwithstanding his diabetes. It is awarded to the winner of the weekend series closest to June 23, their anniversary.
Thomas H. Hendricks Memorial Trophy
This trophy was donated by Bob and Cici Hollowell in memory of Thomas. Mr. Hendricks sailed C Scows as well as other classes with the Maxinkuckee Yacht Club. It is to be awarded to the winner of the 4th of July weekend series.
Margaret Holmes Washburn Memorial Trophy
This trophy was donated by Margaret Washburn in memory of her husband. It is to be awarded to the winner of the weekend series closest to July 16th - her wedding anniversary.
Walker W. Winslow Memorial Trophy
This trophy was donated by his wife, Eleanor. Walker Winslow was instrumental in reorganizing MYC as we know it today. He was an active member of Maxinkuckee Yacht Club as well as the ILYA. He was the 1st Commodore of MYC after reorganizing in the '40s. His trophy is to be awarded to the winner of the weekend series closest to his birthday - August 10th.
Henry W. Bliss Memorial Trophy
This trophy was donated by his wife, Betty, in his memory. Henry was a longtime member of MYC and was the official timer for all races in the '30s and '40s. His trophy is awarded to the winner of the last weekend series of the season before Labor Day weekend.
Robert and Frances Bolton Memorial Labor Day Series Trophy
This trophy was donated by Maxinkuckee Yacht Club in memory of Robert and Frances. Both were active members of the yacht club. Robert was an avid E Scow sailor. He was also Director of Culver Naval School. This trophy is to be awarded to the winner of the Labor Day Series.
Washburn Match Race
This trophy was donated by William Washburn, better known as Cutter. Cutter was an active member of the yacht club and C Scow sailor. The trophy is to be awarded to the winner of the C Scow match race series at the end of the season.
Kathryn T. Schaub Trophy
This trophy was donated the summer of 2006 in honor of Kathryn "Kitty" Schaub, by her son, Steve Schaub, an active C Scow Sailor. The award is a tribute to Kitty's lifelong commitment to the yacht club, serving many roles including commodore in '82, and on the race committee for numerous years. She was considered by many the "Matriarch of MYC". This trophy shall be awarded to the winning crew of the C Scow match race series at the end of the season, because more often than not it is those who work behind the scenes who contribute the most.
Walker Winslow Yachting Supremacy T-1 Trophy
Walker Winslow sailed with the Number T-1 during his years as a MYC sailor. This number has since been retired. This trophy is to be awarded to the C Scow sailor who has the best average (least number of points) in the Spring, Championship and Fall series.
MC Scow Trophies
MYC Philips MC Trophy - Spring Series
MYC Philips MC Trophy - Fall Series
These trophies were donated by Carl and Patricia Philips for the MC Fleet. The Philips have been avid participants in the yacht club for many years and wished to help support the growth of the MC Fleet by purchasing these two trophies. Beginning in 2014, the trophies are awarded to the winners of the Spring Series and the Fall Series. Previously, the trophies were awarded to the winners of the the Saturday Series I and the Saturday Series II.
James M. Moss Trophy - Championship Series
This trophy was donated by Jim and Betty Moss. Jim and Betty have been vital forces in the Maxinkuckee Yacht Club progress for many years. Beginning in 2014, this trophy is to be awarded to the winner of the Championship Series, and previously to the Sunday Series Season Champion of the MC Fleet.
Gilmore MC Trophy
This trophy was donated to MYC by Dave and Jean Franckowiak in honor of Dale and Ann Gilmore. Dale and Ann have been dedicated volunteers to MYC in many ways, including countless hours serving on the Race Committee boat. It is to be awarded to the winner of the MC Memorial Day Series.
Michels Commodore's Cup
This trophy was originally given to Norman Michels in 1941 when he was Commodore of the yacht club. His family returned this trophy to the club when Mr. Michels passed away in hopes that it would be used as a race trophy. It is awarded to the winner of the weekend series of the Commodore's Party.
Jeri Tucker MC Trophy
This trophy was originally awarded to the Hobie Sailors. Dave Tucker was a former C Scow sailor and he made the trophy for the Hobie Fleet in honor of his wife, Jeri. The Hobie fleet has not existed since the summer of 1993. It was voted at a regatta committee meeting in 2003 to award the trophy to the winner of the Fourth of July weekend series among the MC sailors.
Emory Baxter Memorial Trophy
This trophy was donated by Joyce H. Speer. Emory was a longtime sailor of C Scows - sailing from the 30's into the 60's. When he was Commodore in 1957, Joyce was his secretary and also crewed with him for some time. This trophy is awarded to the winner of weekend series in the middle of July.
L. Roy Ford Memorial Trophy
This trophy was donated by the L. Roy Ford family in memory of Roy, who died while racing in an E Scow on Lake Maxinkuckee. Previously awarded to the winner of the first Sunday race after Memorial Day, it is now awarded to the winner of first weekend series of the Championship (summer) series.
Norman & Helen Michels Trophy
This trophy was donated by their daughter, Janie Michels. Norman and Helen were longtime residents of Culver and active members of MYC. Norman was an avid E Scow sailor in the '20s and '30s. The trophy is to be awarded to the winner of the weekend series closest to August 10th - their wedding anniversary.
Lee Roth Trophy
This trophy was donated by the Charles Roth, Commodore 1969, in honor of his wife. It is award to the winner of the last weekend series before Labor Day weekend.
Fred Wurster Trophy
The trophy was donated by Judy and Allen Becker to MYC in honor of Fred Wurster, former MYC Commodore and founder of the MC Fleet. It is to be awarded to the winner of the MC Labor Day Series.
MC Match Race Trophy
This trophy was donated by the Grant family. Three generations raced MC Scows in the same season. The trophy is to be awarded to the winner of the MC match race series at the end of the season.
Other Trophies
Carol & John Zeglis Trophy
This trophy was donated by the MYC in 2006 in honor of Carol & John Zeglis. Carol and John are active members of the MYC and John sails in the C and MC fleets. For many years, the Zeglises have hosted the Annual Sunfish Regatta, open to all Sunfish sailors on the lake. This trophy is awarded to the winner of the Sunfish Championship series.
Rupert P. Esser Cup Series Trophy
This trophy was donated by Rupert Esser himself. It was his christening cup given to him at the time of his baptism. It is to be awarded to the winner of the series of the first race of the last three Saturdays raced in Junior Fleet.
Frank and Charlotte Gates Sportsmanship Trophy
This trophy was given in memory of her parents by Miss Charlotte Gates. It is to be awarded to the C Scow sailor who exhibits the best sportsmanship-like behavior on the race course. The skippers are to meet and vote on the recipient.
Fred Holmes Trophy - Best Girl Crew and Best Boy Crew
These trophies are in memory of Fred Holmes, a former MYC member and were first awarded in 1939. The trophies were donated by Jean & Dave Franckowiak in 2023. They are to be voted on by the C Scow skippers and awarded to the best female crew and the best male crew for that season.
Bill Keedy Most Improved Senior Skipper Trophy (30 and over)
This trophy was donated by the Maxinkuckee Yacht Club in memory of Bill Keedy. Bill started at a young age, sailing on Lake Maxinkuckee, first as a Hobie skipper and then later as a skipper of C Scows. This trophy is named in honor of Billy for his enthusiastic love of sailing and should be an inspiration to all sailors. It is awarded to the most improved skipper as determined by the Senior Fleet Captain in consultation with the fleet.
Winslow Trophy For Most Improved Junior Skipper (Under 30)
This trophy was donated by Walker Winslow himself to be awarded to the most improved Junior skipper. This award is to be determined by the Senior Fleet Captain, in consultation with the fleet.
James Rodney Todd Memorial Trophy
This trophy was purchased by the Maxinkuckee Yacht Club after the sudden death of James Rodney Todd. Rodney was a loyal member of this yacht club. He served on the race committee for many years and he did this with a smile on his face. He put in many hours of time and energy to help the club flourish. This trophy is to be awarded each year to a member of the yacht club, excluding present officers, who have unselfishly volunteered their time.
MYC Team Trophy
This trophy was donated to MYC at the awards banquet in 2007 to promote fleet participation. It is awarded to a Fleet team (seeded by the fleet captain) with the lowest overall score for the races in the month of July. The anonymous donor expects this trophy to be our version of the "Stanley Cup" and should be rotated between the teammates throughout the year and treated and celebrated much like a member of the family.
Mary Lewis Becker Memorial Trophy
This trophy was donated by the Becker family in her memory. Mary Lewis was an active supporter of the Junior Fleet program and her trophy is currently awarded to the season winner of the Junior Fleet program.
O.D. Campbell Memorial Trophy
This trophy was donated by the Jack Campbell Family in O.D. Campbell's memory. Mr. Campbell was the original owner of the Culver Marina. It was once awarded to the overall season winner of the Skylark class. Currently, it is awarded to the 2nd place finisher in the Junior Fleet program.
Robert E. Hollowell Memorial Trophy
This trophy was donated by the Hollowell-Speer families in memory of Robert. Mr. Hollowell was very active in the reorganization of the Maxinkuckee Yacht Club following World War II. The trophy was retired and returned to the Hollowell-Speer families in 2016.
Carl F. Walk Trophy
This trophy is awarded to the Culver Midshipman who is in Varsity Sailing and ranks first among his peers during racing events with the Maxinkuckee Yacht Club. It is to be determined by the Commander of the Naval School.
