About Maxinkuckee Yacht Club

The Maxinkuckee Yacht Club (MYC) is a vibrant sailing and social club based on the beautiful shores of Lake Maxinkuckee in Culver, Indiana. Social sailing on the lake has a long and proud history, beginning in 1896, and the club was officially founded in 1901 as the Aubbeenaubbee Yacht Club.

Today, MYC organizes sailboat racing every weekend from Memorial Day through Labor Day, attracting sailors of all ages and skill levels. The club hosts three active fleets: C Scows, MC Scows, and Sunfish. The Junior Fleet, now known as Maxinkuckee Adventure Sailing (MAS), meets on Saturday mornings, providing excellent opportunities for young sailors to develop their skills. Ladies Sailing is held on Sunday mornings, encouraging women to sail and coach on the water. The highlight of the sailing season is the Annual Fall Regatta, held the weekend after Labor Day, featuring competitive racing for C Scows and MC Scows.

In addition, MYC hosts the popular annual Sunfish Regatta on the last Saturday in July, which is open to all sailboats 15 feet and under. This event encourages sailors to “bring what you have” and showcases the diverse sailing talent from across the region. This year’s regatta saw over 35 boats participating, reflecting the growing enthusiasm for sailing on Lake Maxinkuckee.

As mentioned above, in 2015, MYC took a significant step in youth sailing development by launching Maxinkuckee Adventure Sailing, a dedicated program aimed at training the next generation of sailors. This program is held at the Culver town beach, marking a shift from the traditional Junior Fleet location at the Campbell/Thews pier. To support MAS, MYC purchased ten O’pen Bics—small, agile sailboats perfect for young sailors—and established a four-day camp that provides hands-on instruction and sailing experience.

Beyond the races and training programs, MYC boasts a rich social tradition. Throughout the summer, members enjoy a variety of gatherings, including the Commodore’s Party, the Family Picnic, and cocktail parties in July and August. Although the club does not maintain a physical clubhouse or facility, these events are generously hosted by members at various waterfront homes, fostering strong camaraderie and community spirit.

For those who regularly participate in or follow MYC’s weekend races, the iconic pontoon Committee Boat has been a familiar sight for 33 years, faithfully supporting race management and safety on the water. However, after more than three decades of service, the boat is showing signs of wear, underscoring the need for updates to continue supporting the club’s vibrant sailing activities.
